Actually, I've tried many combinations in the midimapper, each time
with the same result: Cubase loads the first patches that will fill
up the memory.
Even if I use the Ultra1024K set, and if I pre-loads the patches with
patch manager, Cubase won't let me use the patches I want!!!!
And I'm quite sure that those 'first patches' are reloaded each time
the CB window is activated (ie it comes to the front), because I can
see my hard disk working a lot and it takes several seconds. If I do
not have any arrangement window winthin Cubase, it won't reload the
patches (at least this is logical since there's no patch to load!)
The funny thing is that I am able to use the old demo version of
Cubase 1.0 (with no patch caching support) using the patch manager.
But not CB 2.6.
If you know someone on the net who have CB 2.x and a GUS working
together, please let me know

Hi all,
I've managed to get around the Terminal Velocity
lockup problem some people are having. (If you don't have
a GUSMAX and/or can't use MAXSBOS, stop reading now)
If you choose SB Clone from the setup menu, yes, the game
locks up after a few minutes. However, if you load MAXSBOS
and choose SB Pro from the setup menu, the lockup problem
goes away. The sound is still 8bit mono, 22khz. You CAN
choose stereo in the options menu, but its crippled at 11khz
and sounds terrible. This is not really a solution, native
support would be a real solution. Hope this helps.

it can be solved with an indirect connection to Cubase. Use my free
virtual MIDI driver from

and install it.
This freeware utility is some kind of OMS for Windows :-)
It allows connection of multiple Windows Midi Programs. It works like a midi
cable from the PC's midi-in to midi-out, all midi messages sent to output are
received from the input, but this is done in software here.
You must also use Steinberg's setup-MME utility
ftp://mcc.ac.uk/pub/cubase/UPDATES/Windows/setme_up.exe
to turn off some MIDI ports inside Cubase (turn off the virtual MIDI in ports).
The setup should look like:

What? ...Hmmm... My MCT PCI SCSI-3 has a jumper to set it to any of the
four PCI interrupts, -A through -D. That's not slot dependent. You're
right, though, not every motherboard supports blitting one PCI interrupt
to multiple IRQs. Seems that everything else would work alright though,
like DMA and mapping registers to ports.

Yeah, but consider:
1] First of all, those PCI "burst" figures are nonsense. The maximum
performance you can really expect out of PCI is 60MB/sec across the PCI bus.
2] The GUS has to do interpolating access to do sample rates slower (i.e.
almost always _two_ memory accesses for each sample), so the speed
doesn't go down quite like you'd expect.
3] Unless the playback rate is an integral multiple of the sample rate,
you're still going to get double memory accesses.
4] 16-bit is twice as large as 8-bit, so 16-bit double accesses are words.
5] Any general memory bus is a bad place to sample RAM in general, esp. for
ISA bus. It complicates design, and drives the price up. Bottom line.

Check if there is a BIOS Setting for Memory Parity. The NMI is usually
used for memory parity errors, although alot of motherboard makers are
disabling (i.e. no including) it on the theory that the 32-bit SIMMs
don't have parity and memory never fails these days. Yea, right. :-(
Anyway, if you can't turn it on, I'd suggest bringing the system back.
NMI is part of the spec so if they claimed it was PC-compatible, they
are wrong...

Dear All,
When playing a stereo recording a get a strange result: it sounds
dull. However, each individual channel sounds fresh and crisp. Also,
when I record a mono CD (Beach Boys: Pet Sounds) it sounds good.
Naturally I concluded that both channels were not 'in phase', because
you get roughly the same effect when one of your speakers is connected
differently (in polarity) to the amp then the other. BUT my cables are
OK (I think) and when I look closely to the recorded audio both
channels seem to be in phase.
Does anyone have an idea?
Forgive if this question was asked 100 times before, I'm new to this
group.

The DIGIPAK Drivers are old, out dated, and poorly suited for a 32-bit
application. Almost anything else (AIL32,HMI,etc) would have been
better. DIGIPAK supports 2 channels at the most while HMI could have
done GUS-hardware mixing for the multi samples.

This can't go on. Everytime I get my hands on a brand new game and want to
play it, the sound is either:

or funny and wierd.
Sometimes it work though. Sometimes, but that's after hours of rebooting and
IRQ/DMA conflicts. Take Magic Carpet f.ex. A brand new era in gaming, and
fun to play too. But no sound. Maybe, and that's just maybe, Gravis will
produce some funky patches. But that'll probably going to take months. This
sucks. Someone told me that I could use some drivers and replace this and
that, and then end up with midi-sound. Only. But the problem is that I don't
wann do all this slavery just to get noises out of my speakers. I want to
start the game, select my good old GUS with the correct settings and then be
able to play the game. That's how it works with a soundblaster. And it
works... Everytime. Damn, I'm depressed. I'm actually thinking about
shipping my GUS to "The Museum for Red Stuff" in Moskva. And then go out in
the real-world(in disguise) and buy myself a brand new,
easy-to-use-and-always-supported, soundblaster.
Please send your moral support to my E-mail adress.
In the end, I just want to ask one question to the developers of the GUS:
How come !every! game supports soundblaster and only a few(might be
more)supports the GUS?
If it's a matter of money, I could give you some.
Besides, you can't blame it on the gamedevelopers. They can't be
stupid.(might be that I'm wrong there) They just !have! to know that
billions(more or less) of people own a GUS, and all those people won't buy
they're game unless it supports GUS native(You won't buy it woun't you?). I
think Gravis should take some time to inform those companies that don't
support their soundcard about how many that actually own a GUS. They should
also take some time to bribe them if that helps. CAUSE IT REALLY F*CKING
SUCKS TO SEE GAMES THAT SUPPORT STUFF LIKE LOUSY SHITTY THUNDERBLASTER(????)
AND NOT GUS. Who the h*ll owns a Thunderblaster anyway?
I know at least one more person that feels the same way as I do. It might
even be more.
Yeah, and one more thing. If any of you find out how to get sound on Mag
Carpet in this Century, feel free to mail me.

Subject: The disappearing mouse cursor
I think that I also have the disappearing mouse cursor problem but I wasn't
aware that it was the Gravis software causing it. To confirm, my symptoms are
thus:
1. The mouse cursor disappears as Windows finishes booting-up after initially
being visible.
2. The mouse remains usable but only 'invisibly'.
3. My 'stars' screensaver doesn't work properly when it kicks in - the screen
goes blank but the stars don't appear.
4. Microsoft Visual C++ hangs when I try to compile. Yeah, I realise most people
won't have seen this. I was attempting to write a remedy at the time. I gave up
after deciding that it wasn't just a case of the cursor disappearing, but
Windows was a bit unstable. :-(.
All of these symptoms disappear when I exit Windows and reload. The Num Lock &
mouse buttons remedy that someone suggested eariler has no effect.

The only thing is new is the Windows driver, nothing other is newer
than the software that comes with GUS ACE.

I was wondering if anyone out there has done a comparision of the
GUSMax and the Ensoniq SoundScape Elite soundcard and which one is a
better card? Also, does anyone know what the latest revision of the
GUSMax is and is there a upgrade program available for owners of the

Actually, there is a GUS Driver for unix and I'm using it with
FreeBSD... so perhaps you can use it with NeXTStep since it is based on
the Mach kernel which is BSD based...

Subject: RE: Software v.4.11
Just a note about installing v4.11. Most people seem to be under the
impression that its just window's drivers. I'm fairly sure that it installed
MAXSBOS too (over the original). Also, I've noticed the occasional burp
with my GUS max (only on stereo files) in Windows (just like the old days).
I don't remember this being the case with the previous version 3.59.
Anyone else noticed this. BTW I've a GUS MAX.

P.S. I just have to say that the install programs that Gravis are using
now are tops (If a little ugly, i.e. sim-windows). I had a nightmare
installing a Pro 3D this morning, Media Vision could learn a thing ot two...
(BTW I don't use a 3D at home of
course!)

Subject: playing to external synth under windows
hi there! I've got my sb cable to work under windows. Anyways, when I use
Midisoft recording session to playback to my external synth, it uses the
wrong instruments. i.e. instead of using the GM bank, it selects bank A
on my synth for playback and its pretty stuffed 8-)
Anyone got any ideas?
